Fruit of the Month: Cherries
Apart from being delicious (especially at the moment!!), cherries have some great nutritious characteristics, including being fat-free, sodium-free and cholesterol-free. They are also a good source of fibre.
Cherries have been shown to have several health benefits. They contain anthocyanins, which is the red pigment in berries. Cherry anthocyanins have been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Anthocyanins are also potent antioxidants.
Cherries have also been shown to contain high levels of melatonin, which may assist in reducing the risks of heart disease. Besides being an anti-oxidant, melatonin has also been shown to be important for the function of the immune system, and may also promote more restful sleep.
Cherries have a very short fruiting season. In Australia they are usually at their peak around Christmas time, in southern Europe and America in June, and in the UK in mid July.
Finally some cherry trivia facts...
- The Romans are believed to have discovered sweet cherries in Asia Minor in about 70 BC and introduced them to Britain in the first century AD.
- Although the fruit has always been popular for dessert and culinary purposes, cherries were used during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries for their medicinal properties.
- Hot cherry stones were once used in bed-warming pans and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream associates cherries with love and romance!!!

Healthy Organic Xmas Gift Ideas
We have a couple of great gift ideas, which we think are healthier and more thoughtful than some of the more conventional (and less healthy) gifts often given at this time of year. And its not too late to have them organised and delivered pre Xmas!!
Idea one is our fantastic gourmet hamper - not only is it beautifully presented in a pine box, it is packed with healthy, certified organic (and also very useful!) gourmet products. People really appreciate receiving luxury products such as olive oil, balsamic vinegar, jam, hot chocalate and herbal teas. A present they can actually use! These items will last well into the new year. We do sneak in some chocolate as well (certified organic of course!). Home delivered in the period before Xmas, this hamper has proved to be a sure fire winner over the years.
A more unusual idea, but we think an excellent one, is to buy a friend or family member a fruit and veg box, to be delivered either pre Xmas or into the new year. You can select a one off box as a gift in our mixed box shopping aisle, but to really encourgage someone to improve their healthy eating habits, we offer a 4 week classic box package, at a 10% discount to the equivalent weekly prices. What better way to say "I care" than by giving someone delicious, seasonal, fresh organic fruit and veg to their door for a month! All the details you need to order are contained on our website.
