Your Wellbeing: Holistic Dentistry
What is holistic dentistry?
The teeth and jaw have an enormous impact on general health and well-being.
All parts of the body are connected. No part works in isolation from the rest. We often lose sight of this in the specialisation approach of modern medicine. The mouth has a very rich nerve and blood supply. It harbours a lot of bacteria and is the entry point for all of the body's food and water. So it is important that your mouth is healthy!
The mind, body and spirit are also connected, in very practical ways - much more so than we have been taught. Who would have thought that today's busy lives would have an impact on our teeth? But it is true.
As a holistic dental practice we care for your health by combining the best in both conventional and 'alternative' healthcare practices.
What does 'holistic' mean in practice?
Not only do we provide state-of-the art dentistry supported by the latest computer diagnostic equipment, but we also work with other treatments, techniques and (where appropriate) other health professionals to give you the best possible opportunity for healthy teeth and wellness. ·
- we use dental materials which are non toxic to the human body - for example, we do not use mercury amalgam ·
- we use techniques which minimise harm and intervention - in this we are greatly assisted by the exciting new technologies, for example digital X-rays which deliver only 50% of the radiation level
- we use nutritional and other natural supplements to ensure healthy building blocks for teeth and gums
- we look at how your muscles and bones are working together and adjust these if necessary
- we consider the biomechanical, or structural; biochemical; and spiritual/emotional influences on the body

Your Body: Time is Your Most Precious Asset
Time is your most precious resource How you spend your time has a dramatic effect on your health and fitness, family, education, personal relationships, success at work and spirituality. Everything that you do either helps or hurts. It’s a simple phrase and you have probably heard it before but have you considered the depths of it.
A great exercise to do is to write out a list of everything that you do and then to sort everything into either “no real value” or “Cumulative Value”. Something that has cumulative value has a compounding effect that will build from one instance to another and will have either a positive or negative effect. For example watching TV has no real value, however doing fitness training three times a week for an hour each time has a positive cumulative value, constantly eating junk food or chemically treated food has a negative cumulative value.
Throughout our life we build habits of how we spend our time. Building these habits we are often influenced by others, sometimes at a very young age before we can decide for ourselves. Even when we do make our own decisions we may have made it without considering all the factors. Take being an accountant, you might want to be one because you are good with numbers and like improving processes, but have you considered the lifestyle of an accountant, sitting down all day, very low activity, postural challenges, often staring at a computer screen, work hours, pressure, consequences of mistakes etc (think about your job)
How much time do you spend being who you want to be, doing the things that you want to do, with the friends family or associates that you want to be seeing? When considering how you spend your time think about your goals in the major areas of your life, think about the cumulative effect of how you spend your time and very importantly think about how healthy you want to be to live that exciting life?

Your Mind: Yoga for Kids
It is often acknowledged that yoga and a good diet are good for us. If so, then surely for children this is truer because their early years are when the foundations of their health are being laid. What better foundation than one of consciousness in body, breath and mind and strong Values in choosing food that will nourish their bodies’ right throughout their life.
Getting kids started on the yoga trail from a young age is like planting a seed that will attract them to all things good for their future. Kids yoga encapsulates some fundamental learning experiences in a fun and easily assimilated way. They come to understand that they need to learn balance then once mastered this brings awareness and concentration with it. They are also asked to draw upon their strength and flexibility in ways they never would have normally contemplated. This teaches them perseverance and an understanding that things do change eventually. It’s a very sweet message to give them when they get impatient that their head is not touching their feet yet, though once they do eventually get there they are overjoyed for their achievement.
In order for kids to have the endurance and stamina to keep up with what they’re mind is asking their bodies to do they need a good diet. While much can be said about what is good to feed kids for maximum nutrition and energy the most important thing to consider is to avoid unnecessary “non-foods” (eg. processed, preserved and additive enhanced foods) wherever possible and incorporate as much fresh fruit and vegetables preferably from an “Organic” source as much as possible.
