Mesclun is a salad mix of assorted small, young salad leaves. The idea of mesclun mix which originated in Provence, France.
Salad mixes or 'mesclun' were originally French; the name comes from the word mescla, which means 'to mix' in the local dialect of Nice. The idea was to make a salad that included diverse taste and texture sensation: bitter, sweet, tangy, crunchy and tender.The contents of the mix will vary and often contains leaves such as baby spinach, curly endive, dandelion, lamb's lettuce, mizuna, purslane, red chicory, red oak leaf lettuce, rocket, and romaine.
Green leafy vegetables are a great source of important nutrients and phytonutrients such as omega 3's and beta-carotene which is the precursor to Vitamin A which supports the immune system, provides anti oxidant properties and is a great vision nutrient. The bitter herbs such as rocket support liver detoxification. Vitamin C, fibre, and a large amount of water is also found in this mix.
Any salad additions such as cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots go well with mesclun mix and can be found fresh and crispy from Woolworths and Harris Farm.
