Until the early part to the middle part of the 20th century, all food was grown organically. However, it wasn’t labeled as organic food, it was just simply food and farmers used natural means to control the pests and feed the soils. Nobody had the idea of spraying synthetic chemicals and using these chemicals in order to enhance crop growth and the economy. Food scientists also invented genetic engineering where farms selectively bred to improve their stock or their seeds.
These chemicals were discovered by default during the Second World War. This was when research on chemicals designed as nerve gas was found to be capable of killing insects that were harmful to crops.
It wasn’t until 1939 that a new class of insecticides called DDT was developed. This insecticide was developed by Paul Muller in 1939 in order to counter the pest problems. Since then, a new way of farming has emerged where the use of synthetic chemicals is highly endorsed.
In the 1940’s, at the same time as this industrialisation of agriculture began, a movement called the organic movement began in order to counter the problem of these new insecticides and fertilizers. Over the decades, the organic movement has taken pace as people become sick of the health hazards of these synthetic chemicals. Today, organic products occupy prime shelf space in the big chain supermarkets.
