The process of rearing farm animals for food has changed dramatically from the
family farms of yesteryear. The reality of this is a
situation that not only compromises the welfare of the animal but also
compromises the food they naturally should be eating.
Grass feeding is a practice that is not entirely familiar
to most consumers. 100% grass-fed beef
comes from cows that graze in pasture all year round. This contrasts with the lot
fed approach in which cows consume processed food for much of their life.
In the world of organic, the Australian Certified Organic
Standards require that the majority of food given to the animal is grown with
the local vicinity, making feed lotting or grain feeding practically very
difficult. For this reason the majority of organic beef is grass fed or largely
The life of an organic cow and one that lives on a
conventional feedlot are worlds apart. The
Australian Certified Organic standard also requires cattle and sheep to be free
ranged on pasture and does not allow for confinement feeding, also ensuring
humane treatment of the animal.
A cow’s natural diet is that which can be grazed or
browsed. Grazing refers to eating of the
grass and browsing refers to eating of leaves and twigs. Whilst they graze and
browse, they are primarily grazers and can digest very large amounts of
grass. Historically, a cow’s natural
diet consist of grass and not grains.
Grasses that are found in pastures include Buffel Grass,
Mitchell Grass, Blue Grass, Flinters Grass, and Panic Grass. There are also many non-grass plants found in
pastures, including legume foliage such as alfalfa, vetch, sainfoin and birds foot
trefoil as well as red, white, and crimson clover. Depending on the season and
region of the country, 100% grass fed cows consume a mixed variety of these
plants, along with other naturally occurring vegetation.
Benefits of Grass Fed Meat
The nourishment you get from plant foods relies a lot upon
the quality of soil in which they grow.
The same rings true for animal foods.
As humans, the nourishment we get from animal foods depends a lot upon the
quality of food they are given access to as well as access to pasture and fresh
Cows that have been 100% grass fed improves the nutritional
quality of beef. This includes a better quality of fat comprising of a high
quality saturated fat, which is richer in omega 3 fatty acids. In addition, grass fed beef has a healthier
ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids as well as increased amounts of
conjugated linoleic acid. There is also
increased amounts of vitamins including vitamin E and vitamin A. Research shows
that grass fed beef is higher in cancer fighting antioxidants such as glutathione
(GT) and super oxidant dismutase (SOD) activity as compared with their grain-fed
Organic grass fed meat has the added benefit of not having
been exposed to agricultural chemicals which could accumulate in the fat of the
animals and in turn be ingested and stored in your bodies.
