Mandarins
Mandarins include a diverse group of citrus fruits that are characterized by bright peel and pulp color, excellent flavor, easy-to-peel rind and segments that separate easily. The carpels, or sections, of mandarins separate more easily than those of oranges.
They can often be interchangeably called either madarins or tangerines. Interestingly, all tangerines are mandarins but not all mandarins are tangerines! They may also be referred to as Clementines, Tangors or Tangelos.
Commercially grown mandarins and clementines account for only 7 million tonnes of fruit globally, which when compared to the orange crop of about 44 million tonnes, is a mere drop in the ocean!
Like oranges, all mandarins are an excellent source of vitamin C, a good source of B vitamins, low in calories and a good source of fibre.
Mandarins are relatively perishable and have a shorter life than oranges. They should be handled carefully, even though they are a firm, solid fruit. Store at cool room temperature for up to one week or store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
