Ange’s Corner

Hi everyone,

Over the past few months we’ve had quite a few comments about how delicious the apples we’ve been providing to you have been. So I thought I give you a little bit of interesting information on one of our all time favourite fruits…

Apples are a highly nutritious and cleansing fruit. They are a good source of vitamins A and B1 and rich in a number of minerals including potassium, calcium, phosphorus and sodium, and the bioflavonoid quercetin. Studies have shown that apple extracts can significantly reduce the risk of colon cancer.

The fruit is rich in pectin, which can help reduce high cholesterol levels and remove toxic metals such as lead and mercury from the body; it is very beneficial for intestinal problems and it binds radioactive residues and excretes them from the body. In addition, apple juice is very cleansing for the liver and gall bladder.

It is a good idea to eat apples with their skin. Almost half of the vitamin C content is just underneath the skin. Eating the skin also increases insoluble fiber content. Most of an apple's fragrance cells are also concentrated in the skin and as they ripen, the skin cells develop more aroma and flavour.

Keep on enjoying this season of glorious apples!

Until next month, keep well and eat well… Angela

A Few Health Tips

Keep a Positive Mental Outlook - There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing.

Show Empathy - By showing empathy, we focus less on ourselves and more on others.  This gives us a sense of worthiness.  Ask yourself, what can I do today to make myself proud – what can I do today for someone else.  When you do something good for someone else, you create a circle, receiving more in return.

Reduce Stress - Easier said than done, stress busters come in many forms. Some techniques recommended by experts are to think positive thoughts. Spend 30 minutes a day doing something you like. Count to ten before losing your temper or getting aggravated. Avoid difficult people when possible.

What’s in season?

Beetroot, Mandarines, Jerusalem Artichokes, Rhubarb, Spinach, Grapefruit, Parsnip, Avocado
