About Genetically Modified Food
This is the transferring of individual genes from one plant species to another in order to affect its performance. GMO are often referred to as ‘transgenic’, that is, they contain genetic material from another organism. More than 150 different GM crops have been approved for production around the world. It is difficult to know which foods (other than organic) have been genetically modified. However, it is now a requirement by the FSANZ (Food Standards Australia and New Zealand) to label food and food ingredients with ‘genetically modified’ should it apply. This information makes it much easier for the consumer to be aware of what they are ingesting.
