How to check it is organic Before buying organic, it is important to understand what is ‘certified organic’ and what is not. In terms of organic produce, the organisations must be accredited by the Federal Government’s Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) to certify organic and bio-dynamic produts from about 1500 growers and processors around Australia. AQIS randomly monitors the certifying organisations, which in turn regularly inspect the certified farms and processing plants. The following certification labels guarantee that it has been certified:
- Australian Certified Organic (ACO): the Biological Farmer Association's certification arm
- Biodynamic Research Institute
- National Association of Sustainable Agriculture Australia
- Organic Food Chain (OFC)
- Organic Herb Growers of Australia
- Safe Food Queensland
- Tasmanian Organic-dynamic Producers
